This printer worked well for the first 8 months, except for getting frequent error messages when trying to print - it said it was not connected even though it was clearly installed properly. That meant stopping in the middle of a project and reinstalling it over and over. HP sent out updates twice, which were supposed to correct this.

Then suddenly one day it wasn't able to save scanned documents in PDF or any other useful program. After 11 phone calls to tech support staff (yes, 11!) with varying degrees of competency and English ability, and approximately 9 hours of my time wasted, they finally and reluctantly connected me to someone at the management level. This person agreed that it was pointless to continue troubleshooting the issue, but that it couldn't be HP's fault, so it had to be my computer causing the problem! Note: the most experienced tech person I talked to had already told me it was definitely HP software, not my computer.

HP asked me to download the software onto another computer to see if it worked better. The result: now that computer is unusable, as the download caused it to crash. Even after uninstalling all HP programs it still crashes repeatedly. Their response? I must have two bad computers.

To their credit, they are replacing it with a different, albeit refurbished, model "for all my trouble," not because they think it will make a difference. My advice: if you ever buy anything from HP, get the extended warranty!
