After having good experiences with HP products in the past and considering the initial inexpensive cost of this all-in-one printer, I went ahead and made the purchase.
When the product arrived it was fairly easy to set up to my Dell laptop and it was compatible with VISTA. Both were concerns after reading some of the reviews, but didn't seem to be a problem.
After having this product for a year, following are the pros/cons I have discovered:
First issue was that the toner is only good for about 200 pages, at that. This meant that I was purchasing 2-3 catridges a week. You also have to align the printer every time you change the cartridge, which in my opinion, is a complete waste of toner. Tried looking on the internet to find a way to turn this off, but to no avail. Customer service was also no help - from what I could understand.
Next problem is that sometimes it pulls several pages through at one time causing the printed page to be split up among several pages. You either have to reprint (more wasted toner) or in the case of a fax, either have them re-fax the document or get out the scissors and tape. Real professional!
Someone else mentioned that the quality of the phone and other components seemed pretty cheap. It is made of light plastic, thus it is lightweight. So, that could either be deemed a positive or a negative depending on how you plan on using it and where the unit will be located. For instance, it would fit quite nicely and it wouldn't be too heavy for a TV tray.
For scanning, it seems to do just fine. I don't have any complaints in that regards. Unfortunately, that's not why I purchased it.
Bottom line...if you want an inexpensive printer and you don't do a lot of printing, Christmas cards and labels for the holidays or an occassional school project, then this would be fine. But it's not cost effective when it comes to a small business or home office set-up.
