I bought the HP J3680 for my small business. I needed dependable printing of invoices and mailing labels, plus the ability to copy and scan. Caveats: I've used this only for printing black and white text.

Pros: Compact. Easy setup (Mac). Built in phone. Ink available everywhere. Takes up very little space on desk. The copier has many features to customize your job. The menu prompts are easy to follow. The phone (yes, even a phone!) has good sound.

Cons: Printing not the fastest, but the quality is exceptional. Cartridges are a bit finicky when being changed, but you'll get the hang of it once you've done it.

I have not had this printer for very long, and it is not my primary printer. I purchased it because I was looking for a printer that had a copy function that would copy legal size paper and had an atomatic document feeder. I needed a fax machine for my home office. I did not want to spend too much but did not want a regular fax machine because of the special cartridges, etc. I use this machine for outgoing faxes mainly. Very convenient. I've been pleasantly surprised by the high quality of even photograph prints, although the machine has only two ink cartridges, not four. My last all-in-one, the Epson CX9400Fax, had an extremely temperamental set of four cartridges, which ran dry in the blink of an eye and could not be refilled, and frequently were "not recognized" at all. At long last, the machine did not run, even for faxing, and had to be replaced. (Fortunately it was still under warranty.)

This HP, by contrast, also has a much smaller footprint. It has a huge advantage over most all-in-one machines---a hand held head set. This makes it possible to send faxes even through international calling cards, when necessary, rather than paying the exorbitant phone rates generally charged by land line carriers. For those all-in-one machines without hand sets, that option is off the table. It's dial direct, with no intermediaries, or forget faxing.

Moreover, the paper seems to feed reliably (another problem with the Epson).

I bought this printer after reading the glowing reviews here. I feel like I have been duped. The first of these printers that I received would not work properly. It would feed through one piece of paper all the way, then a second sheet halfway and stop. No troubleshooting for this problem was available in the online manual. Assuming I had bad luck with a lemon, I returned it to the store and got a second. My printer arrived in a timely manner. From then on, everything else went downhill. When I tried to use it, it does not work. I was getting "Paper Jam" errors even though there was not any paper. I didn't even get a chance to complete the installation process because of the stupid "Paper Jam" message.

I spoke with HP's (outsourced) customer service department, and they went through all of the troubleshooting steps that are also posted on the website. I should note that the kind of paper that I use doesn't matter when I get error messages before I even put a paper in the machine. I went back and forth with HP's customer service department, and they confirmed what I already knew... that my printer was in need of a replacement.

They were to send me a replacement printer. I got a confirmation e-mail, telling me that my printer would be sent out. However, the HP website had an old address. I sent an e-mail to HP, and I received a confirmation that they received my new address. But, when I called a U.S. customer service line, I was told that they only had my previous address. I was then switched over to a customer service representative whose grasp of English was not that firm. After talking (and waiting) for about 40 minutes with her, I was told that they had my new address.

You have a color fax machine tha can send and recieve color faxes .. That is uncommon among dedicated fax machines even that cost over $200... Just got the item a week ago, thinking there's just a few negative review and a lot positive review proves that the printer must be good. There was no instruction manual, but knowing all-in-ones, I put the printing cartridges in and prepared to do some work- it didn`t do anything except continuously print out alignment papers. The only way to scan and photocopy items is by feeding them through the printer, this means that it is impossible to photocopy a page from a book or from a notebook without physically ripping the page out. My other issue is that installing it to my laptop was a huge pain. This printer worked well for the first 8 months, except for getting frequent error messages when trying to print - it said it was not connected even though it was clearly installed properly. That meant stopping in the middle of a project and reinstalling it over and over. HP sent out updates twice, which were supposed to correct this.

Then suddenly one day it wasn't able to save scanned documents in PDF or any other useful program. After 11 phone calls to tech support staff (yes, 11!) with varying degrees of competency and English ability, and approximately 9 hours of my time wasted, they finally and reluctantly connected me to someone at the management level. This person agreed that it was pointless to continue troubleshooting the issue, but that it couldn't be HP's fault, so it had to be my computer causing the problem! Note: the most experienced tech person I talked to had already told me it was definitely HP software, not my computer.

HP asked me to download the software onto another computer to see if it worked better. The result: now that computer is unusable, as the download caused it to crash. Even after uninstalling all HP programs it still crashes repeatedly. Their response? I must have two bad computers.

To their credit, they are replacing it with a different, albeit refurbished, model "for all my trouble," not because they think it will make a difference. My advice: if you ever buy anything from HP, get the extended warranty!
